John Daniel was born in 1836 at Cruden in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He arrived in Melbourne in 1858. He for worked in farming at Kangaroo Ground, then went to Baw Baw diggings in Gippsland where he didn’t succeed, as he returned 2 months later to Melbourne and started farming with a Mr. Donaldson near the city. He was a man who took a keen interest in horses. For many years he was on the committee of the Victoria Agricultural Society, Heidelberg, also of the Royal Melbourne, and a good member of the Whittlesea Society.  He was a member of the Whittlesea Council for many years and took a keen interest in municipal matters.  He married Mary Joan Gibbs, daughter of Albion and Mary Ann Gibbs of Whittlesea in May 1876 at the Royal Mail Hotel, Whittlesea.

John and Mary had 4 sons and 2 daughters together. Sadly, Mary died in 1898, but remarried the following year to Margaret McClelland.

John died on 12 February 1911 in Whittlesea, and is buried at the Yan Yean Cemetery.
