WHS Meeting & Guest Speaker Anne Paul

February 16 @ 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Members of the WHS and anyone interested in the City of Whittlesea history are welcome to join us at the Whittlesea Bowls Club.

Anne Paul – Footprints on the Landscape

This presentation is an updated version of one given at the Parks Victoria / Melbourne Water Community Day in 2018.

The 1837 squatters James & Edward Willis were some of the earliest European squatter – settlers along the Plenty River. The talk traces their activities as they move their merino sheep up the Plenty River to Mernda and establish the Bridge Inn Hotel, after leaving Van Diemen’s Land and squatting in Lower Plenty, then Janefield.

The diary of James Willis is used and provides primary information as well as insight into the lives of Victoria’s early pastoralists, which is complimented by further research.

The presentation is included in a 2023 book by Anne on the lower section of the Plenty River, Walking the Kurrum Yallock (Plenty River) – history, heritage & environment.  Copies are available for sale for $20 cash on the day.

Background

Anne grew up in Pheasant Creek on a family farm and is familiar with the Plenty River and outer NE region of Melbourne. She is a foundation member of the Greensborough Historical Society and has contributed to a number of publications including the Friends of Toorourrong book, Just Add Water.

Anne had led heritage walks along the Plenty River in Yallambie – Viewbank for many years, and has been a member of the Friends of the Plenty River since the late 1990’s. This has assisted her appreciation of the heritage and environment of the Plenty River and its importance to the region.
